Cure your varicose veins with diet and supplements
Here we explore varicose vein cure through proper nutrition and specific supplements.
Although there is no specific anti varicose vein diet, well balanced nutrition is good not only to your venous health, but also to your overall well being.
Your normal daily diet should include:
- plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
- 6-8 cups of water
- Protein, like fish and lean cuts of meats
- Whole grains
- Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (ex. fish, seafood, flax seed oil)
You should limit yourself from:
- processed foods
- salty foods
- sweets and sugar
- artificial additives like artificial flavour or color
- junk food
There are specific foods and supplements, that are believed to be, in particular, very beneficial to the varicose vein cure.
They are:
Horse chestnut extract
It is by far the most popular varicose vein cure supplement. It derives from Horse Chestnut tree's seeds or "nuts".The main therapeutic ingredient of Horse Chestnut extract is Aescin which:
- Reduces vein inflammation
- Tones the vein walls which helps the blood flow back to the heart.
- Promotes vein elasticity.
- Prevents swelling
It comes in different forms like pill, liquid, powder, cream or lotion.
Topical formulas are not believed to be as beneficial as oral formulas.
Dosage:
It is recommended to take 250 mg of standardized extract twice a day and if you choose topical solutions, follow the recommendations on the packaging.
Side effects:
Possibility of upset stomach.
To avoid it, make sure you take the supplement with food.
If you develop sensitivity or allergic reaction you may experience:
headache, itching, rash or dizziness.
If you notice any of the above stop taking the supplement and consult your doctor.
Contraindications
- Do not take when pregnant or nursing
- May interfere with anticoagulants by increasing their action therefore it is necessary to consult with your doctor if you take blood thinners.
- Consult your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems
If you decide to give Horse Chestnut a try, make sure you:
- only use specially prepared extracts from reputable manufacturers,
- choose ones that contain 50 mg aescin per dose.
Grape Seed Extract
Grape seed extract is high in OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) which are very potent antioxidants. They promote healthy circulation and in turn help with varicose veins.
Dosage:
The RDA for grape seed extract has not been established, but most research doses range from 50 mg - 200 mg per day.
Grape seed extract is considered a safe supplement with no known contraindications, drug interactions or side effects.
It is however advised to consult your doctor prior to taking the supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or have any medical conditions.
Hawthorn
Hawthorn has been traditionally used to strengthen the heart muscle and blood vessels.
The medicinal parts of the plant are the red berries that come from a small thorny tree or shrub, that is native to Europe. They contain flavonoids, vitamins B and C among others.
The supplements come in various forms, including pills, herbal teas and liquid extracts.
There is no known risks or contraindications in taking this natural supplement.
High fiber foods
They will help you avoid constipation which contributes to varicose veins.
Examples of foods with high fiber content:
Fruits and vegetables
Whole grains
Bran cereals
Foods that contain vitamin C and bioflavonoids
Vitamin C and bioflavonoids help strengthen your blood vessels.
Examples of foods high in Vitamin C:
Goji berries, Citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, pineapple, avocados, tomatoes, alfalfa, cantaloupe, green peppers.
If you do not get enough vitamin C in your diet you might want to consider taking supplements.
RDA is 60 mg, however there is no risk of toxicity from higher doses.
I take 500-1000 mg daily.
