How does the varicose vein laser treatment work? Strong pulses of light energy are sent to the affected vein. That makes the vein eventually fade and disappear. There is no need for needles or incision, and the procedure is done on outpatient basis. Is it painful? You might feel a little bit of discomfort as the laser hits the skin, but it is minimal. How many treatments do I need? Usually 2-5 treatments are needed, depending on the size of the vein. How long is a treatment? About 15-20 min. Are there side effects? There might be some redness and swelling of skin immediately after the procedure, but it usually goes away within few days.
Do I need to rest after the procedure? No, you can return to regular activities right away.
There also is another varicose vein laser treatment called EVLT (endovenous laser therapy) This new technique that recently arrived from Europe, is usually recommended for larger varicose veins. What is EVLT? It is a minimally invasive procedure, performed under local anaesthesia, in which a thin laser fiber is inserted into the saphenous vein. It then delivers laser energy in short pulses. What does it do? The laser energy damages the vein walls, and in turn closes the vein to blood supply. Other veins take over the work of that vein. How long is a treatment? One treatment lasts about 45 min. What is the recovery period? Patients usually walk out on their own, following the procedure, and can return to regular activities in a short period of time. Is there side effects?
There could be a minor soreness and bruising at the insertion site. It is usually relieved with over the counter pain killers.
